Jim and the Water Buffalo

My good friend Jim Cashman made an appearance in one of the Super Bowl ads this weekend. He was one of the unusual pet owners in a spot sponsored by Pedigree. You can view the ad here.

Even better (and funnier), the Pedigree site has some shorts of each of the pet owners. Here is Jim, as Tyler:

Congrats to Jim!

iPhone App Stats

Apple recently announced that the 500 millionth iPhone App has been downloaded from the App Store (where they claim there are 15,000 apps available). I checked my downloaded app count, and found that it is exactly 100. This seems like a good moment to stop and take a look at some stats of my apps.

Default Apps Pre-Loaded on iPhone19
Apps Downloaded100
      Games39
      For Jessica's Amusement19
Icons Currently on my iPhone92
      Icons that are Web Shortcuts10
Seasonal (Halloween, Xmas, etc.)5

One quick interesting calculation:

Downloaded Apps on my iPhone = (Icons on my iPhone) - (Icons that are Web Shortcuts) - (Default Apps Pre-Loaded on iPhone) Downloaded Apps on my iPhone = 92 - 10 - 19 = 63

So of the 100 Apps I've downloaded, 37% of them are now sitting unused in my iTunes Library.

I'd go into what I've paid for downloaded apps, but I'm not exactly sure how to get that info (and, let's face it, I probably don't really want to know). The vast majority of the apps I've downloaded were free or $0.99, but certainly some were more. I've got no problem with developers pricing an app for more than $0.99 (many are well worth it), but it's just a fact that I'm more likely to take a chance on an unknown app if I only stand to lose a dollar.

Final note: In a future software update, I'd welcome an improved way to manage the 92 icons on my phone. I've got a rough system I implement manually, but there's definitely room for improvement here.

Driveway Melting

I'm very grateful that our driveway faces south. It means that as long as I can shovel enough snow to expose the asphalt of the driveway, then if the sun comes out and warms up the asphalt, then the driveway can melt itself off.

Today the temperature outside (when I last checked) was well below freezing (about 5 degrees F). But with the sun out, the asphalt can soak up the energy anyway.

This means we should be able to avoid having an icy driveway for months at a time.

Pizza dough

We went to Belmar this evening for a nice little holiday event at their ice rink. We got there in time to have dinner, which we did at a cute little pizza place.

When we placed our order, the waitress asked Jessica if she would like some pizza dough. Jessica, of course, had no idea what to make of this question; we were a little thrown ourselves, but said sure. Out came a lump of pizza dough, about the size of Jessica's two fists together, for Jessica to play with while we waited for our food. Just like playing with Play-doh, with the added bonus that you can also eat it.

I hadn't seen a restaurant bring out dough for kids to play with before. I thought it was pretty clever.

Pirates!

We had a fun Halloween here in Colorado. (Why has it taken me a week to say so? Can't quite explain it: time is flying by in general. I can't believe Thanksgiving is only a little over two weeks away.)

Jessica was a pirate. She chose the costume weeks before at the store, and would proudly explain anytime anyone cared to ask that she was going to be a pirate for Halloween. In fact, when asked once if she wanted to try on the costume, she then explained that the costume was for Halloween, and she had to wait until then to wear it.

We had lots of family over for the big night. Jessica got to trick or treat once at a community gathering and again in our neighborhood. She was very pleased to get candy, and equally pleased to help pass some out to those who came to our house.

Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child: TMBG in Northampton...

A couple of TMBG tidbits from Spare the Rock:

- One song they played is from the forthcoming Here Comes Science, and was a correction of sorts to "Why Does the Sun Shine?," pointing out that the sun is not in fact a mass of incandescent gas, but instead that "Why Does the Sun Really Shine? (The Sun is a Miasma of Incandescent Plasma)" (I believe that is the title of the song).

- Flans said in the interview that he's working on a song about Tesla. The scientist, not the awful band.
